The government took several steps to improve healthcare infrastructure, including setting up hospitals across states and designing new medical colleges or institutes under its flagship scheme Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).

By providing funding through private investment through equity investments or loans from banks, more than 100 AIIMSs are projected to be established by 2023 – 24 under the PMSSY initiative.
